Fall 2010 Procedures

Referees for 2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade Games

  • Each Friday night, make sure to check the referee schedule for tomorrow at http://www.braintreeyouthsoccer.org/refs.htm

  • On Saturday,
    • Report to the snack stand 15 minutes before your first game
    • Check the printed referee schedule in the snack stand, especially "FlexRefs"
    • Pick up your whistle and stopwatch (your first week only)
    • Pick up your game ball (size 4)
    • After your last game of the day, you can get your payment, pizza and drink at the snack stand.

  • In order to receive "licensed referee" payment you must
    • be a "USSF Certified Soccer Referee" - Grade 9 or Grade 8
    • wear your complete referee uniform
      • yellow referee jersey (or alternate color)
      • black referee shorts
      • black referee socks
      • black cleats
      • in cold/rainy weather, wear appropriate gear, but your referee shirt must be on the outside

  • Non-licensed referee uniform consists of
    • Blue "STAFF" t-shirt (available at snack stand)
    • Blue or black shorts
    • black cleats
    • in cold/rainy weather, wear appropriate gear, but your referee shirt must be on the outside

Assistant Referees for 5th/6th and 7th/8th Grade Games

  • Each Friday night, make sure to check the referee schedule for tomorrow at http://www.braintreeyouthsoccer.org/refs.htm

  • On Saturday,
    • Report to the correct field 15 minutes before your first game
    • Check the printed referee schedule in the snack stand (East), or the referee table (Thayer)
    • Pre-game conference with head Referee
    • After your last game of the day, consult Referee for payment

  • Wear your complete referee uniform
    • yellow referee jersey (or alternate color)
    • black referee shorts
    • black referee socks
    • black cleats
    • in cold/rainy weather, wear appropriate gear, but your referee shirt must be on the outside

There are 2 entry level courses for Referees: the Recreational Referee Course (Grade 9) and the Referee Course (Grade 8).

  • To successfully complete the Grade 9 Recreational Referee course the candidate must be at least 12 years of age and must attend 8 hours of course work, including a written test.
  • To successfully complete the Grade 8 Referee course the candidate must be at least 16 years of age, must attend 16 hours of course work and pass a 100 question written test.

To referee for BYS in the Fall

  • 6v6 (2nd grade) or 7v7 (3rd, 4th grade), you must be:
    • in high school, with significant soccer experience, or
    • in middle school, with a Grade 9 badge.
  • 11v11 (5th-8th grade):
    • Assistant Referee, you must be:
      • in high school, with a Grade 9 or Grade 8 badge.
    • Referee, you must be:
      • an adult, with a Grade 8 or higher, badge.
